One of the coolest things about the Bible is how the end echoes the beginning. The story starts in a garden and ends in a city — but not just any city. A city with a river, a tree of life, and God walking among his people. Sound familiar? It should. It's Eden 2.0 — except this time, it's permanent.

### What Was Eden, Really?

The Garden of Eden wasn't just a nice park. It was the place where humans had *direct, unbroken access* to God. Genesis describes God "walking in the garden in the cool of the day" (Genesis 3:8). Just... hanging out. That's the picture. No barriers. No priests. No rituals. Just relationship.

Eden had a few key features that'll matter later:

- **The Tree of Life** — eat from it, live forever (Genesis 2:9, 3:22)
- **A river** flowing through the whole garden (Genesis 2:10)
- **No death, no shame, no curse** (Genesis 2:25, and everything changes in Genesis 3)
- **God right there** with humanity

Then Adam and Eve sinned, and they got kicked out. God put angels with flaming swords to block the way back to the Tree of Life (Genesis 3:24). In one moment, access to eternal life and God's presence was cut off.

The rest of the Bible? That's the story of how God gets us back.

### Paradise — An Eden Word

The word **"Paradise"** (παράδεισος, *paradeisos*) pops up three times in the New Testament:

1. **Luke 23:43** — Jesus to the thief dying on the cross next to him: *"Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."*
2. **2 Corinthians 12:4** — Paul talks about being "caught up to Paradise" and hearing things he wasn't allowed to repeat.
3. **Revelation 2:7** — *"To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the Paradise of God."*

The word literally comes from Old Persian and means "an enclosed garden" or "a royal park." It's a *garden word*. When Jesus told the dying thief he'd be in Paradise, he was choosing a word that echoes Eden. That's not an accident.

What *was* Paradise before Christ's resurrection? One common reading — leaning on the Luke 16 rich-man-and-Lazarus picture — is that it was the comfort section of Hades: a place of rest for the righteous dead, but not yet God's full presence. After Christ's resurrection and ascension, the picture shifts. Paul connects Paradise with "the third heaven" (2 Corinthians 12:2-4), which sounds like God's direct presence.

That reading makes sense, but it leans on Luke 16 more than people realize — and as we said in Part 1, that passage should be handled with care. What we *can* say confidently: Paradise is an Eden word, Paul connects it with God's presence, and Jesus promised the dying thief: *"Today you will be with me."* Where Jesus is — that's where Paradise is. (We'll tackle what the in-between state actually looks like in Part 4.)

### The New Heaven, New Earth, and New Jerusalem

The last two chapters of the Bible — Revelation 21-22 — describe the final home of the redeemed. And the details are wild in how deliberately they mirror Eden:

**Eden had a river.** So does the New Jerusalem:
> *"Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb."* — Revelation 22:1 (NIV)

**Eden had the Tree of Life.** So does the New Jerusalem:
> *"On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations."* — Revelation 22:2 (NIV)

**Eden had God's direct presence.** The New Jerusalem takes it even further:
> *"And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Look! God's dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.'"* — Revelation 21:3 (NIV)

**Eden had no curse.** The New Jerusalem restores that:
> *"No longer will there be any curse."* — Revelation 22:3 (NIV)

**Eden's Tree of Life was blocked off.** In the New Jerusalem, it's open again:
> *"Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city."* — Revelation 22:14 (NIV)

### Not Back to Eden — Forward to Something Better

This is important: the Bible's story isn't a loop. We don't go *back* to Eden. We go *forward* to something greater. Eden was a garden where two people walked with God. The New Jerusalem is a city where all nations live with God. The garden was vulnerable — a serpent got in and everything fell apart. The city? No serpent. No tempter. No possibility of another fall.

What was lost in Genesis 3 isn't just restored in Revelation 22 — it's upgraded. The story isn't about returning to innocence. It's about arriving at glory.

> *"He who was seated on the throne said, 'I am making everything new!'"* — Revelation 21:5 (NIV)

Not "everything over again." Everything *new.*
